If you’re suffering from an ingrown toenail, finding lasting relief is paramount. At Active Feet Podiatry Clinic in Edinburgh and Haddington, we specialize in ingrown toenail surgery, offering a permanent and effective solution for chronic discomfort and infection. Our highly skilled and compassionate podiatrists are dedicated to restoring your foot health and getting you back on your feet comfortably.
What is Ingrown Toenail Surgery?
Â
Ingrown toenail surgery is a minor, highly effective procedure performed to alleviate the persistent pain and recurring infection caused by ingrown toenails. While conservative treatments can provide temporary relief, surgery offers a definitive solution by safely removing the offending portion of the nail and preventing it from growing back incorrectly.
At Active Feet, we typically perform a procedure called a partial nail avulsion with phenolisation. This involves:
- Local Anaesthetic: The area around your toe is numbed completely, ensuring a pain-free procedure.
- Gentle Removal: Only the problematic edge of the nail (or sometimes the entire nail, if necessary) is carefully removed.
- Preventing Regrowth: A chemical (usually Phenol) is applied to the nail bed (matrix) to permanently stop that section of the nail from growing back, preventing future ingrown issues. This is crucial as the toenail often grows back worse if the cause isn’t addressed.
This procedure is typically quick, minimally invasive, and allows for a rapid return to your daily activities.

What to Expect During Your Ingrown Toenail Surgery Procedure
Â
We understand that any procedure can cause anxiety, but our experienced team specialises in making you feel at ease. Here’s a general overview of what to expect during your ingrown toenail surgery at Active Feet:
- Consultation & Assessment: Your podiatrist will thoroughly assess your toe, discuss your history, and confirm ingrown toenail surgery as the most suitable treatment option for you. All your questions will be answered.
- Anaesthetic Application: A local anaesthetic injection will be administered to your toe. This can feel like a slight sting but will quickly numb the area completely, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.
- Procedure: Once numb, your podiatrist will carefully remove the problematic portion of the nail. The chemical application to the nail matrix then ensures permanent prevention of regrowth. You’ll only feel pressure, not pain.
- Dressing: A sterile dressing will be applied to your toe.
- Aftercare Instructions: You’ll receive clear verbal and written instructions on how to care for your toe at home.
The entire ingrown toenail removal surgery typically takes between 30-60 minutes.
Â
Ingrown Toenail Surgery Aftercare & Recovery
Â
Proper aftercare is vital for optimal healing and to prevent complications after your ingrown toenail surgery. At Active Feet, we provide detailed guidance and support through three dedicated follow-up appointments.
- Keep it Clean and Dry: Follow our instructions for changing dressings and keeping the area sterile.
- Pain Management: Any mild discomfort post-procedure can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
- Rest & Activity: You’ll be advised on activity levels during the initial healing phase. Most patients can return to normal activities fairly quickly.
- Follow-Up Appointments: These are crucial for monitoring your healing, re-dressing the toe, and providing further advice.
Our team is always available to answer any questions or concerns you have during your recovery.
